OUR HISTORY
How We Started Safe Motherhood
2007

Began Operation as an NGO
This NGO started as a response to the call of God on my life and that of my wife, Crystal. The call came on the 19th of October, 2007 during the defense of my project for the Part II fellowship examination of the West African college of surgeons. There was a demand by people for us to establish a place for the practical demonstration of what we teach on television. This led to the birth of the Safe motherhood specialist hospital LTD.

Started the Hospital
There was a demand by people for us to establish a place for the practical demonstration of what we teach on television. This led to the birth of the Safe motherhood specialist hospital LTD. The hospital started as a reference hospital for traditional birth attendants and other maternity caregivers who benefited from our enlightenment programs. They refer cases that require specialist obstetric and gynecological attention. Cases of obstructed labour, cervical incompetence leading to recurrent miscarriages, placenta previa, uterine fibroids and uterovaginal prolapse were sent to us. Cases that require specialist obstetric, gynecological, pediatric(children) or general surgical attention, came as referrals also from doctors and midwives who run their own outfits and the general public. Herniorrhaphies, appendectomies, hemorrhoidectomies, intestinal resections and anastomosis are done frequently in the hospital. Instruments, medical equipment for better patient care are constantly provided and existing facilities, upgraded and maintained. People who know us or heard our messages brought their pregnant women to deliver in safe motherhood hospital. Some brought those that need surgery to do their surgical cases in the hospital. They heard testimonies that deliveries and surgeries in safe motherhood were safe. They also heard that prayers are being constantly offered in the hospital for the safety of our clients and patients. This increased their level of confidence in the hospital.

Hospital Growth
The hospital has grown from a humble beginning in Diobu to a well-known centre in Rivers state. For over three thousand child births (deliveries) in safe motherhood specialist hospital LTD, there was no maternal death All the women went home alive and well. The babies that died were those who died in utero before presentation to us and babies with congenital malformations not compatible with life. Our experience in the course of our practice has been put down as books and booklets. From our first published work on 1st may, 2009 over 65 books and booklets have been published. The first published work known as Unprofessional Obstetrics Practice and Obstetric Pelvic infection came out of the observation of severe iatrogenic infections women contracted in unskilled birth places in the course of labour and delivery. The incidence of pelvic infection leading to the death of the baby or the woman or secondary infertility has gone down in our area of operation from our work.

2019
